THE WHEELWRIGHT'S BOX

I recently completed this keepsake box as a gift for a friend who is a very skilled wheelwright, repairing and crafting wooden wheels for carts and wagons from scratch.

Traditionally, three types of timber are used for wooden wheels made by wheelwrights: oak, ash and elm. Elm for the central hub of the wheel, oak for the spokes and ash for the felloes (or rim).

I wanted to incorporate all three types of wood in this box. The main body of the box is made from oak with traditional dovetail connections on each corner as this worked beautifully with the grain of the wood. The base of the box is made from ash and the insert in the lid is a beautiful piece of burr elm. In addition, I used some rather lovely Andrew Crawford flush fitting brass hinges to give it that extra special luxurious touch.
